Photographing an Event at Sandton Convention Centre: The Venue Guide

By Eddie Mtsweni 5 October 2026 8 min read

Short answer

Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) has 22,000 m² of event space across four main levels, from a 10-seat function room to the Pavilion for 4,500 cocktail guests. For good photos, plan for three things: the low stage lighting in the Ballroom, the travel time between levels, and a second photographer if sessions run at the same time. SCC is at 161 Maude Street in Sandton CBD, a short walk from the Gautrain.

SCC hosts some of the biggest conferences, expos and gala dinners in Africa. It's also a venue where photographers who don't know it lose time on escalators, struggle with dark ballrooms and miss keynotes while stuck on the wrong floor. This guide covers what you need to know before your event, space by space.

The table shows why one plan doesn't fit every event. A 150-person AGM in a committee room and a 1,200-guest awards gala in the Ballroom need completely different gear, timings and photographer counts.

Photographing the Ballroom

The Ballroom is where most gala dinners, awards and big plenaries happen, and it's the hardest space to photograph well. The room is designed to look atmospheric, which means dark tables, bright screens and coloured stage light.

  • Ask for a front light wash on the stage. Coloured spotlights look great to the audience and turn award winners purple in photos. A soft white front light on the podium and handover spot fixes it.
  • Agree the photographer's position at the stage. For awards, the photographer needs a clear spot at the foot of the stage, not behind a camera riser or a table.
  • No direct flash on speakers. It distracts speakers and flattens the room. Fast lenses keep the atmosphere.
  • Watch the screens. Big LED screens behind speakers can blow out in photos. Your photographer should expose for the face, not the screen.

Photographing the Pavilion

The Pavilion is SCC's biggest venue, used for launches, concerts and large special events. Scale is the challenge: the stage can be far from the best crowd angles.

  • Plan for both a long lens (the stage, the reveal moment) and a wide lens (the size of the crowd). For big launches, that usually means two photographers.
  • Confirm the "hero moment" in advance. If a product reveal lasts ten seconds, the photographer must know exactly when and where it happens.
  • Agree access to the front of stage and any raised platforms with the production company before the day.

Photographing expos in the exhibition halls

Exhibition 1 sits at street level with 5,430 m² of floor space. Exhibition 2 offers 5,050 m². For expos, the job is less about one big moment and more about covering everything.

  • Send a sponsor and stand list. Sponsors want proof their stand was busy. Give the photographer a list, ideally with a floor plan, and mark which stands must be covered.
  • Shoot stands early and busy. Get clean stand shots before doors open, then return when the stand is busy.
  • Mixed lighting. Every stand has its own lighting colour. A good edit corrects this so your gallery looks consistent.

Breakaways, committee rooms and boardrooms

The five committee rooms and the boardrooms hold up to 200 people and are popular for AGMs, breakaways and strategy sessions. Photographers need to be quiet and quick here: a few speaker shots, audience engagement, then out. If breakaways run at the same time as the main plenary, map out which sessions matter most so the photographer isn't guessing.

Timing: moving around SCC

SCC is spread over four main levels connected by escalators and lifts, with links to Sandton City and the nearby hotels. Moving between a Ballroom keynote and an exhibition hall takes minutes, not seconds, especially when delegates are moving at the same time.

  • Build 10 minutes of movement time into the photographer's schedule between spaces on different levels.
  • If two things you care about happen at the same time on different levels, book a second photographer. Our second shooter add-on is R2,450.
  • Capture registration early. The concourse is busiest in the first 30–45 minutes, which is when the "packed event" photos happen.

Parking, load-in and getting there

  • Address: 161 Maude Street, Sandton.
  • Gautrain: SCC is a short walk from the Gautrain Sandton station, which helps delegates flying in from O.R. Tambo.
  • Parking: SCC advertises ample secure parking. For big public events, organisers often direct guests to nearby parking such as the Atrium on Maude and 5th. Put the parking instructions in your invitation.
  • Suppliers: photographers, AV and décor teams need load-in times and access details from the SCC events team. Send them to every supplier in writing.

Parking and access rules can change from event to event, so confirm with your SCC event coordinator.

POPIA at large SCC events

Big conferences and expos mean hundreds or thousands of identifiable people in your photos. Put photography notices at registration and on the event app or programme, and offer delegates a simple opt-out, such as a coloured lanyard. See our POPIA guide to event photography for the details.
